How old is William Contreras?
William Contreras is 28. Because he was born on December 24, 1997, he remains 28 through most of 2026 and turns 29 late in the year.
An athlete’s age is often listed differently depending on the date a profile was last updated. MLB’s official profile gives Contreras’s birth date, which makes it possible to calculate his age for any specific date. As of October 30, 2026, he is 28; after December 24, 2026, he will be 29.
Where was William Contreras born?
Contreras was born in Puerto Cabello, a port city in Venezuela. He grew up in a country with a deep baseball tradition and began his professional path as a young player before signing with the Atlanta Braves organization.
His career connects Venezuelan baseball development with the major leagues in the United States. He has also represented Venezuela internationally. The Associated Press reported that Contreras was part of the Venezuelan team that won the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a major milestone for the country’s national team.
William Contreras’ early MLB career
Contreras made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves on July 24, 2020. He entered a Braves organization that had developed his older brother, catcher Willson Contreras, as well. William steadily gained experience in the major leagues before his role expanded.
His first seasons included time as a catcher and designated hitter. In 2022, he was selected as an All-Star with Atlanta. The following year, the Braves traded him to Milwaukee as part of a three-team deal. The move gave Contreras a larger opportunity with the Brewers, where he became a key part of the lineup and the pitching staff’s battery.
Contreras’s ability to contribute offensively while taking on the demanding responsibilities of a catcher helped him stand out. Catchers must manage pitchers, communicate signs, block pitches, frame deliveries, and control the running game, while also preparing for their own at-bats. Handling both sides of that job over a full season requires consistency and physical stamina.
Breakout seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers
Contreras made an immediate impact in Milwaukee. In 2023, he batted .289 with 17 home runs and 78 runs batted in, according to MLB’s season recap. He won the National League Silver Slugger Award at catcher and was named the Brewers’ Most Valuable Player and Top Newcomer by the Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
He followed that season with another strong year in 2024. MLB records show that he hit .281 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI, earned another All-Star selection, and won a second consecutive Silver Slugger Award. He was also named Milwaukee’s team MVP for the second straight year and selected to the All-MLB First Team.
These achievements marked his growth from promising player to one of the league’s most productive catchers. His value was not limited to hitting: the Brewers regularly relied on him behind the plate, where he worked with pitchers and helped direct the defense.
2026 season and World Series MVP
Contreras reached a career milestone in 2026 when the Brewers won their first World Series championship. Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games, clinching the title with a 4–1 victory in Game 5 on October 28. Contreras was named the World Series MVP.
The Associated Press reported that Contreras hit .381 in the Series and produced an RBI double during the clinching game. He also helped guide the Brewers’ pitching staff and threw out four attempted base stealers. MLB’s official player page lists him as the 2026 Willie Mays World Series MVP.
The award made Contreras the eighth catcher to win World Series MVP. It was also a significant personal achievement after years of development in the major leagues. He was 28 at the time of the 2026 World Series, placing the title and MVP award among the defining accomplishments of his career so far.
During the 2026 regular season, MLB records list Contreras with a .270 batting average, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI. These are season totals, separate from his postseason performance.
What makes Contreras important to the Brewers?
A catcher’s impact is not fully captured by traditional batting statistics. The position involves working with the pitching staff, receiving pitches, blocking balls in the dirt, and making quick decisions under pressure. Contreras’s role includes these defensive responsibilities as well as a significant place in Milwaukee’s offense.
His offensive production has been particularly notable because catchers often face physical demands that can make it difficult to play every day. Contreras has continued to contribute across long seasons, starting games behind the plate and also appearing as a designated hitter when needed.
The Brewers’ 2026 championship showed how important his combination of offense and defense could be in the postseason. His World Series MVP performance was not just about his batting average; it also reflected his work with pitchers and his ability to manage the game from behind the plate.
William Contreras and his brother Willson
William Contreras is the younger brother of Willson Contreras, who is also a major league catcher and first baseman. The two brothers have both played at the highest level of professional baseball, creating a notable sibling story in the sport.
They have shared All-Star moments and professional milestones. William has spoken of his older brother as a role model and close confidant. During the 2026 World Series celebration, the brothers embraced after William received the MVP award, an emotional moment reported by the Associated Press.
Their careers have followed different paths and involved different teams, but the family connection is a meaningful part of William’s public biography. It also shows how baseball has shaped more than one generation and member of their family.
Awards and career milestones
Contreras’s major honors include multiple All-Star selections, two National League Silver Slugger Awards, an All-MLB First Team selection, and the 2026 World Series MVP award. He also won Milwaukee’s team MVP honor in 2023 and 2024.
These awards reflect different parts of his game. The Silver Slugger recognizes offensive performance at a position, while the All-Star selections reflect recognition from fans, players, and baseball personnel. His World Series MVP award came after his performance in a championship series and his contribution to Milwaukee’s first title.
At 28, Contreras has already built an impressive résumé, but his playing career is still active. His future achievements will depend on continued health, performance, and team success.
